Carolina Panthers 2026 Preview

WRITTEN BY: MIKE JOHNSON (@MJOHNSON_86)
Coaching/Philosophy/Scheme Changes ::
  • Offense: Panthers head coach Dave Canales returns for his third season and handles almost all of the offensive decision-making.
  • Defense: Ejiro Evero enters his fourth season as the Panthers’ defensive coordinator after leading them to a drastic turnaround on that side of the ball in 2025.
Personnel Changes ::
  • Bryce Young enters his fourth season as the Panthers starting QB and the team exercised his fifth-year option at the end of April, securing his spot as their starter for the foreseeable future. The team added Kenny Pickett as his primary backup.
  • Carolina let RB Rico Dowdle leave in free agency, leaving Chuba Hubbard as their primary ball carrier entering 2026. Former second-round pick Jonathon Brooks returns after missing all of 2025 due to a nasty knee injury and is expected to be the primary backup for Hubbard, while potentially working into a timeshare if his health allows.
  • Carolina’s receiving corps is largely unchanged, with Tetairoa McMillan returning as their top threat after a great rookie season and third-year receivers Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette working in complementary roles. They did add Chris Brazzell II in the third round of the NFL Draft.
  • Likewise, the Panthers return their top two tight ends from 2025 in Tommy Tremble and Ja’Tavion Sanders and have not made any significant additions.
Schedule ::
  • Divisional Games (6) ::
    • ATL x2, NO x2, TB x2
  • NFC North (4) ::
    • vs. CHI, vs. DET, @ GB, @ MIN
  • AFC North (4) ::
    • vs. BAL, vs. CIN, @ CLE, @ PIT
  • vs. DEN, vs. SEA, @ PHI
Bull Case ::

Quarterback is the most important position in sports and Bryce Young has taken huge steps forward in his two seasons under Dave Canales. He has also shown the ability to be more than a game manager and found himself up to the challenge in multiple shootout-type situations against tough opponents in 2025. The schedule for the Panthers is very tough this season (as we will discuss repeatedly), but that could actually be a boon for fantasy football purposes. While Carolina won on the margins in close games and against soft competition last year, that allowed them to lean on their backfield and play close to the vest often. There is a strong chance they will be pushed and prodded into shootouts this season at a much higher rate than last year. It could be a recipe for success having a team whose offense is maturing and coming into its own right at the same time that their level of competition spikes. Additionally, this is a Panthers team who, in the aforementioned circumstances, could find themselves condensing in a big way. They have worked in a backfield committee in the past, but with Dowdle gone and Brooks health questions it wouldn’t be shocking for Chuba Hubbard to be a workhorse. Likewise, Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker are both very talented and there is a huge gap between them and the next guys on the WR/TE depth charts. Young is a QB who has some mobility, but is not reliant on that to the point where it hurts his teammates. This all creates a situation where assumptions that they will operate in 2026 in exactly the same manner as they did in 2025 could quickly and drastically be proven wrong.
