GAME OVERVIEW::

  • Lowest game total on the slate (by a wide margin), with the Titans currently favored by 1.5-points due to home field advantage (this seems off, to me).
  • Jets RB Breece Hall appears fine after sustaining a groin injury a little over two weeks ago (as of Thursday, September 3) and should not be limited in any way in Week 1.
  • Geno Smith returns to where his career began, signing a one-year, ‘bridge’ contract valued at just $3.3 million to quarterback the Jets in 2026.
  • The Titans looked absolutely dreadful on both sides of the ball during the preseason and could take some time to get going considering the offseason coaching changes and youth.
  • Titans rookie WR Carnell Tate has missed practice time on two separate occasions this offseason, with what Saleh describes as “stiffness.” That, combined with the offseason addition of Wan’Dale Robinson, has me well below consensus on Tate entering his rookie season.
  • The Jets should not be counted on to push game environments this season but they should be much more efficient after hiring Frank Reich as offensive coordinator.

HOW NEW YORK WILL TRY TO WIN::

The Jets invested the bulk of their time and effort into the defensive side of the ball this offseason, entering the 2026 season with six new projected starters on that side of the ball. They used one of their three first round picks on linebacker David Bailey (the other two on wide receiver Omar Cooper and tight end Kenyon Sadiq). Those moves make sense when taken in context with defensive-minded returning head coach Aaron Glenn. Which is to say, the identity of this team should remain on the defensive side of the ball. Frank Reich was brought in to revitalize the offense after the team ranked 29th in points per game (17.6) and total offense (263.6 yards per game), representing one of the bigger scheme shifts in the league. What all that means to us is that we shouldn’t expect the Jets to be pushing game environments, but we should expect them to be more efficient with the ball. In other words, one-offs and concentrated team stacks are likely to be more beneficial to us in GPP play as compared to game environment bets with these Jets this year.

Geno Smith’s career 17.8 percent running back target rate – ninth highest, of active quarterbacks – combines with a couple factors to make this an appealing spot for Jets’ running back Breece Hall, who was recently labeled as a “workhorse” by offensive coordinator Frank Reich. First, some stipulations there. Reich also indicated a willingness to get Braelon Allen into the game in short yardage situations, most notable of which is on the goal line. But almost every back in Week 1 other than Jahmyr Gibbs, Bijan Robinson, and Jonathan Taylor carries significant uncertainties as we begin the new season, and even then, both Gibbs and Robinson have new offensive coordinators/play callers. Back to the good stuff. Running backs saw a massive 133 percent boost in target rate against zone coverages in 2025, as compared to man, which is one of the more nuanced data points I uncovered in my preparation for the season. New Titans head coach Robert Saleh will be calling the defense in Tennessee. Saleh has always utilized zone at elevated rates, which jumped to a massive 75.5 percent rate in 2025 while serving as the defensive coordinator of the 49ers, per statrankings.com’s Coverage IQ tool. Furthermore, everyone just saw Seattle’s second string offense absolutely demolish the first teamers from Tennessee to end the preseason. One of the aspects of Saleh’s defense that is so effective is its complexity, something that can take time to install to its greatest effect. Despite the rather underwhelming production from the New York offense a season ago, Hall managed the 10th highest breakaway run rate to accompany the 12th most explosive runs. Mark this one down as one of the sneakier running back spots on the Week 1 main slate.

Adonai Mitchell appears to have the starting perimeter spot opposite Garrett Wilson locked down entering the new season. The team looks to be easing rookie Omar Cooper in, which is likeliest due to poor camp performance, meaning I wouldn’t expect a massive snap rate for the No. 30 overall pick to start the season. It will be interesting to see how the team handles its tight end situation after spending the No. 16 overall pick on Kenyon Sadiq after taking Jordan Mason in the second round last year. I eventually expect Sadiq to operate as the primary pass catcher given his elite athletic traits, but that could take time to fully materialize. Considering that exploration into where this team’s primary pass catchers currently stand, I wouldn’t be shocked if Wilson continues to see an elite target share for the first six-to-eight weeks as the rookies get their feet under them. Even then, Wilson has only nine 100-yard games and five games of 25+ DK points through his first 58 professional appearances. The list of Wilson’s offensive play callers since his rookie season consists of Mike LaFleur (good), Nathaniel Hackett (horrible), and Tanner Engstrand (poor), meaning his weekly floor should remain elite given the shift to Reich. It is just difficult for me to view Wilson as a serious ceiling threat given his history. Historic trends yield 2.6 “ceiling games” in 2026, making Wilson a player I will likely be well underweight on in 2026 DFS contests. With all of that out of the way, this appears to be a sparkling spot on paper against a secondary with two new starting corners in Alontae Taylor, who graded as a bottom three corner in 2025 while with the Saints, and Cor’Dale Flott, who had his first above average season in coverage last year with the Giants.
