This should not strike you as groundbreaking, but contest selection is a massive part of consistently optimizing for a given DFS slate. Furthermore, and again, this should not strike you as anything new, but each contest with varying sizes, structures, payout structures, and composition should be theoretically optimized differently.
That said, contest selection does not simply mean playing contests with smaller field sizes or ones whose payouts are flat. It means tailoring everything, from your thought process to your game plan development, to the way you construct rosters specifically to the contest in which you are entering.
